SEO for WordPress: How to Generate More Organic Traffic for Your Recruitment Site

SEO for WordPress

WordPress is a popular content management system (CMS) amongst recruiters, and for a good reason. It is easy to use. It is also one of the most popular CMSs in the world. In fact, 40% of websites are made and being managed with WordPress today. SEO for WordPress is also easy and convenient. Various tools and plugins are available to help you improve your site’s performance and search ranking.

But did you know that with simple adjustments, you can further boost your recruitment site’s SEO, which allows you to generate more organic traffic?

WordPress SEO Tips and Tricks for Attracting More Visitors

If you want to drive more organic traffic to your site, here are a few tips from our SEO experts here at Recruitment Traffic that you should follow.

1. Enhance your Core Web Vitals

As a recruitment expert, it’s vital that you know how your WordPress site performs from a user experience standpoint. This will enable you to better provide for your visitors’ needs, which could contribute to your recruitment site’s SEO and your company’s marketing success.

To determine how your site fares when it comes to delivering a quality user experience, log on to your Google Search Console and access the Core Web Vitals report. The report measures three vital factors. They are:

  • Largest Contentful Paint – this is the amount of time it takes for your webpages’ main content to load.
  • First Input Delay – it refers to the amount of time it takes web users to interact with the various page elements.
  • Cumulative Layout Shift – this is how your webpages load and how minor layout changes cause users to click on other page elements unintentionally.

Based on your webpages’ performance, you’ll receive three ratings:

  • Good
  • Needs Improvement
  • Poor

If certain pages receive a “Poor” or “Needs Improvement” rating, you can use Google developer tools, such as Lighthouse or Google PageSpeed Insights, to address the issues. These tools will help you determine the reasons behind your pages’ poor performance.

Once you have applied the necessary fixes, log on to your Google Search Console again and click on the “Validate Fix” button. This will re-evaluate the problematic pages and let you know if the adjustments are effective and sufficient.

2. Determine your domain preferences

You should consider a few essential matters when choosing a domain name for your recruitment site.

a. www vs non-www

Some people believe that it is crucial to add “www” to your domain name. They insist that it can affect SEO for WordPress sites. However, many SEO experts (including us) will tell you that it doesn’t matter if your domain name has a “www” in it or not because it has no impact on your site’s SEO.

However, this doesn’t mean that you should immediately remove the “www” from your domain name. This is particularly important if your recruitment site has been around for years and has accumulated a lot of SEO juice. If you’re going to make modifications to your website’s URL, you should set up redirects first to ensure that your visitors will find the page they are looking for.

b. Duplicate or identical URLs

Another critical matter to consider is the presence of duplicate URLs in your WordPress site. Having identical URLs can hurt your search rankings as it causes Google search bots to crawl different versions of the same webpage. It also diminishes your web authority.

Verify that there are redirect rules in place to avoid duplicate URLs and ensure that the people visiting your site will find the correct version of the page they need. It would help if you also used canonical tags to direct Google’s search bots to the pages they need to crawl.

3. Take advantage of SEO plugins

As discussed earlier, WordPress comes with a wide range of tools that can help you improve your site’s SEO. However, there are specific plugins worthy of your attention and taking advantage of them can give your optimisation efforts a boost.

For instance, Yoast SEO is one of WordPress’ most popular SEO plugins. It is free to use and it allows you to perform a wide range of functions, including:

  • Page and keyword analysis for more effective content creation.
  • Meta description optimisation.
  • Automatic XML sitemaps generation.
  • Launching breadcrumbs.
  • Adding social and schema markup to your site.

4. Edit your permalinks

By default, WordPress URLs are hard to read. When you create a new webpage or post, its URL would resemble something like this: https://abcrecruitment.co.uk/2021/03/11/page-name.

Adding relevant keywords to your URLs can contribute to your site’s SEO. This is why after uploading a new page or post, you should make it a habit to edit your permalinks. To edit your URLs, go to your WordPress dashboard and select the page you want to edit. Then, look for “Permalinks” in the Settings menu. Change the permalink and then click on “Save Changes” when you’re done. If you do it correctly, the URL should look like this: https://abcrecruitment.co.uk/recruitment-services/.

Editing your permalinks would give your SEO for WordPress a boost. Also, it makes your site’s URL structure much cleaner and more accessible.
